When Mary Elizabeth Winstead walks into our West Hollywood
studio, her presence is felt immediately. She is statuesque in a
pair of black heeled boots that put her around six ft tall, her
face freed from makeup, and her hair, a grown-out pixie, casually
tucked behind her ears. Her voice is delicate as she introduces herself
to me and the whole production crew. It’s week three of award
season, and everyone seems to be feeling exhausted, but Winstead is a
welcome breath of recent air and power.
At the time of our shoot, Winstead is days away from heading out
on a worldwide press tour for Birds of Prey, the highly anticipated
female team-up the place she stars reverse Margot Robbie, Jurnee
Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, and newcomer Ella Jay Basco. (It’s
additionally value noting the movie was written and directed by ladies,
Christina Hodson and Cathy Yan respectively.) As Huntress, the DC
world’s crossbow-wielding vigilante, Winstead is a fierce
standout but not without her share of comedic moments. The actress
is sort of at house enjoying the motion hero, or anti-hero depending on
the way you select to take a look at Huntress, and it exhibits in her
performance. “I’m in this zone now the place I really feel actually
snug in that world and I’d wish to go further and additional
into it and perhaps discover something that I can develop and that basically
looks like me,” Winstead shares.
After a short portrait session, through which Winstead’s beauty
confirmed no bounds, we sat down to talk about every little thing from bonding
together with her Birds of Prey co-stars to her 2020 obsessions (she too
can’t cease speaking about that Netflix homicide mystery doc). Maintain
reading for our conversation.

Let’s speak Birds of
Prey. Do you keep in mind if you obtained the decision to
are available for this undertaking? What was your preliminary
response?
It piqued my interest because it was so female-led. Margot
Robbie, the truth that she was starring in it, as a result of I really
respect her as an actress, but in addition the truth that she was
producing, I assumed was actually fascinating. I went and watched
Cathy Yan’s first movie, which I liked, so I really needed to satisfy
her and speak to her about it. I used to be really interested by Birds of
Prey from the get-go, extra so than I feel other films in this
style, as a result of I feel I assumed, Oh, you type of know what to
anticipate, whereas this was something new to me. I was excited to satisfy
all these ladies who are robust and fascinating and unique.
I imagine the term “badass” can be used typically to
describe this group of girls. What does badass imply to
you?
I feel it just means not likely caring what different individuals assume.
Following your true self and your coronary heart and what you consider to be
true to your values I feel is fairly badass. I feel inherently
that requires power, so following your personal path makes you robust
and makes you badass.
Inform us about Huntress. What makes her a very
exciting vigilante in the DC world?
She was so much fun as a result of she comes from such a dark place.
This character is born out of plenty of ache and a variety of trauma,
but I feel in the comics you see this, and we discovered this as nicely,
there’s still a whole lot of enjoyable to be had in that character. Sarcasm in
the best way that she is sort of a lone wolf, she doesn’t really like
to work with different individuals, and the best way she type of butts heads with
the other ladies was actually enjoyable to play with. I feel we discovered
humorous ways of enjoying with that. So she is indignant and fierce and
vicious but in addition loads of fun.

Huntress has a signature purple look that has stayed
together with her by way of her many iterations in the comics. How did you
take the comedian version of her look and give it a modern feel for
this film? Was there something you personally needed to convey to
her look?
I feel the primary thing that we did when it comes to translating it to
the film that’s totally different from the comics is making an attempt to make it a
bit extra tactile and a bit more part of the actual world as a result of the
movie has type of a gritty real-world aesthetic to it inside this
very poppy comic ebook genre. I feel we needed to make it really feel very
tactile and practical, like I might really run around killing
individuals on this outfit, so nothing is just too tight, nothing is just too
restrictive, and there are lots of pockets for weapons and things
like that. I feel that was actually thought-out. Also, in fact,
the things we thought have been cool stylistically have been actually thrilling
to get to brainstorm together with the costume designer, Erin
Benach. And in addition bringing quite a bit from the comics, the purple was
actually necessary as well as the crucifix motif. That is one thing
you see lots in the comics with Huntress because she comes from
this Catholic background, so that you see these crucifixes all through
what she wears within the comics, so that motif is introduced in
throughout every part I put on in the film. It’s delicate, but
it’s there.
What was your fitness routine getting ready for this
position?
You realize, thankfully they didn’t put us on any specific
fitness routine aside from coaching for the roles, which was what
do it’s essential know to be able to play this character? What do you
want to be able to do? Typically I was alone, typically I used to be
with the opposite women, but we just had an enormous warehouse and educated
with the stunt workforce for a number of months, did lots of jujitsu,
numerous kinds of martial arts, a whole lot of drills that might kind of
slowly build into choreography over time, so it was actually fun. I
actually beloved it. I really like working with stunt individuals as a result of I discover
them to be simply unimaginable individuals and so supportive and candy, and
their work ethic is unimaginable, and clearly their expertise is
unimaginable. I all the time discover it really inspiring simply to be around
stunt individuals. I feel really lucky to get the opportunity to do
that.
Are there expertise or practices you’d proceed doing
or take into your on a regular basis life?
After Birds of Prey, I went on to work on another movie with the
similar stunt group, so I really feel like I’ve progressed so much with every
film, and bodily I just move a bit of in another way in my
day-to-day life. My physique feels totally different. I really feel stronger, I feel a
bit harder, and so has affected me in some small methods.
That is such a robust female forged with Margot Robbie,
Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Rosie Perez. Do you could have any notably
fond reminiscences with the women when the cameras weren’t
rolling?
Lots! There have been a whole lot of bonding moments between us on- and
off-set. They are such a stunning group of girls and so enjoyable, so funny
and vibrant and vivacious. I keep in mind there was one night time when
Jurnee and I went over to Rosie’s house and just all sat and
drank wine and cried, simply cried to one another. It was simply so
lovely. They really are, all of them—Margot, Jurnee, Rosie,
Kathy, Sue, Ella—they’re all individuals who I can just decide up the
telephone and inform anything to. There is a actual trust and camaraderie
there that is so particular.

I need to ask about your 2020 obsessions. Who are you
obsessive about right now? What are you obsessive about right now? And
what are you sporting time and again proper now?
Who am I obsessed with? I feel like a little bit of a damaged document and
a bit of a cliché as a result of everyone is obsessed together with her, but I
love Phoebe Waller-Bridge. I’ve been obsessed together with her because the
first season of Fleabag, nonetheless obsessed, just the whole lot about her
from her writing to her appearing to her fashion. I really like her. I’m so
excited to see the place she goes from here and I really hope she
writes extra feminine action-oriented movies as a result of that could possibly be
actually exciting.
And what am I obsessive about? I assume one factor I’ve been
speaking so much about, and it’s weird to name an obsession because
it’s very twisted, but I just saw this present Don’t F*ck With
Cats. I really like once you see one thing that you simply inform other individuals to
watch however you don’t inform them anything about it because you
don’t need to spoil the expertise. So I all the time feel type of
excited once I find a present or a movie like that that you simply get to
inform individuals to observe and discover out their reaction. I’m a bit
obsessed with that.
And fashion-wise, I assume in the mean time I’m making an attempt to maintain
things quite simple. I just about just toss stuff on and go,
so a black turtleneck and a terrific jacket—that’s just about my
go-to thing proper now.
Let’s speak a bit more trend. How do you and your
stylist Penny Lovell, strategy an enormous press tour, like the one you
are in now for Birds of
Prey?
The enjoyable factor about doing an enormous tour like this when you might have a
lot of seems to be to select is that the whole lot sort of takes on
slightly less importance. You possibly can actually just have enjoyable with it;
I’ll put on one factor at some point and another the subsequent; I don’t assume
about it an excessive amount of. It truly is enjoying, and I let Penny handle all
of the tailoring and all the stuff. I let her determine if
something doesn’t look proper on me, and I don’t actually
overthink it too much.
Is there a selected look you’re actually excited about
sporting?
I’m very enthusiastic about my Mexico and London premiere appears
because they are kind of the dressiest appears and I’m excited to
have a bit glamour.
What do you gravitate toward with regards to the pink
carpet?
I’m actually into being very chic and simple with a pop of
one thing that’s a bit extra whimsical or a bit more extravagant
or like kind of unusual when it comes to shapes. I’ve all the time really
liked Pimples, so I really like that type of aesthetic, where it’s easy
however perhaps just a little geometric or there’s something to it that
catches the eye. I used to be in Tokyo just lately and just went crazy
buying there, so I feel like I’m sort of set for the yr.
I’ve obtained a number of key items that I simply throw on and it feels
distinctive and totally different and never like something that everybody has, so
I really like that. I are likely to not store so much regularly, but
once I’m someplace that I don’t usually go, that might be my
time to splurge to get one thing particular.

How does fashion come into play in your life now
versus 5 or 10 years in the past?
It’s onerous to describe. For me, the best way that I stay now, I
don’t really go out that a lot, so fashion isn’t actually part of
my day-to-day life the best way it was once I was younger, nevertheless it
makes once I do glam it up all of the more particular. It’s type of
uncommon for me to put on jewellery or to put on a pleasant gown, particularly
once I’m not selling one thing. However once I do, it’s actually
significant, it’s like a special night time out, and I sort of love
that. In my day-to-day life, I’m often in overalls and wellies
because I stay in a very muddy place, so I wish to get cleaned up
once in a blue moon and do one thing glamorous.
As you consider where you’re in your career now,
what’s a dream position for you at this stage?
I don’t know that I have a dream position essentially, because
I’m all the time impressed by what’s coming to me and I feel like
often what I’m eager for is what ends up coming to me in one
type or one other, so I sort of quietly send it out to the universe.
But I feel I’m actually excited to do more action-comedy. Since
Birds of Prey and the movie Kate I did, I’m in this zone now the place
I feel actually snug in that world, and I’d wish to go
additional and additional into it and perhaps discover one thing that I can
develop and that basically looks like me. I’m wanting ahead to
those prospects.
You are a bona fide scream queen with many
horror/thriller movies in your résumé. Are you itching to do
another scary movie?
I’ve all the time beloved horror. I’ve all the time beloved being the
heroine of a film that requires me to do loads of bodily, gritty
stuff, in order that’s sort of one thing I’ve all the time beloved about
horror, the physicality of it and getting down and soiled and actually
having to claw your means via filth and being coated in blood.
You end up dropping all vainness in those films, and that’s something
I actually love about it. In that sense, I’m all the time open to it, you
know? I don’t close myself off to something.
What horror movies are in your radar proper
now?
I finally saw Parasite. It took me ceaselessly to see it, and I
don’t know that I might actually classify it as a horror film, however
it definitely is horrifying on a number of ranges, and it’s
lovely. To me, that’s when a horror movie hits all the
buttons—when it’s actually entertaining, it’s creepy, it makes
you assume, and it says so much about society and about class, says
one thing about fears on a unique degree. That’s what’s
all the time thrilling to me about horror.
